Click here to sign the guestbook Name Lawrence A. Gonzi Hello David, Odd that I found your book "IRONFIRE" in the home of a devout Muslim. I read the book with a passion in that my relation to the Island of Malta dates back many generations. I'm the great nephew of the late Arch Bishop of Malta, Michael Gonzi, and a distant cousin to Dr. Lawrence Gonzi, the Prime Minister of Malta. My father was born in Birgu and my mother in Mosta. They too endured the attempted siege of Malta by the Germans and Italians. I have a new found strength after reading your most wonderful book. The people of Malta are a proud bunch, and have set an example for the rest of humanity in there pursuit of freedom, justice and independence. I have never experience such feelings while reading a novel. The story of Nico, Luca, Maria and Leonardus sent shivers down my spine and tears running down my cheeks. I commend you for your most marvelous accomplishment. I now feel like a new man with a greater feeling of who I really am. Thank You, Lawrence A. Gonzi Name: Brother Donald Comments Hello David, Name: Joannie Th Comments Hi I am Joannie from Canada I just read two of your books translate in french "la prisonnière de Malte" and “Le faucon d’Istanbul” (Ironfire). The translation is very good. From the first page I was captivated! It's been a long time since I had read such a good book! I look forward for your novels. Keep going with your writing! A talent like that must be shared. Thank you! Bonjour! Merci! Name: Andrea Agius Comments A mind-blowing read! Unputdownable! Definitely my favourite novel of all time. Well done Mr.Ball! Looking forward to reading more of your work! Name: Zoe Comments Dear David, Name: Carmen Farrugia Comments Have so enjoyed reading The Sword and the Scimitar, partucularly as I'm of Maltese decent and feel its the best novel I've ever read! I couldn't put it down and the main characters stayed with me for ages after finishinng the book and kept wondering what happened to them next!! I've just finished the Empires of the Sand which I equally enjoyed and about to start China Run .I can't get enough of your novels David, thank you for re-igniting my passion for reading and helping me know what kind of books I love reading! PLEASE keep them coming!!! Name: AMDP Comments I just read Ironfire - The Sword and the Scimitare. A genuine masterpiece. It is hard to find my words to describe this novel. At the end of the book, I felt almost sad to have finished it. How wonderful it would have been to spend another week following the adventures of Nico, Maria and Christian! My only thought was: how is it possible that everyone don't know this book? Then I truly wished that it would give birth to some movies... but now I am glad that it is not the case, because I realized that a movie could never translate correctly all the things we feel by reading your stories. Thank you so much. Name: Harry Haff Name: Terri Malba Name: Berzelmayr Name: Adrian Name: Maria Name: Eleanor Kennedy I finished The Sword & The Scimitar this morning at 6.30 and I have to let you know just how much I loved the book. I'm not one for superlatives, but on finishing the book, all I could think about was stupendous, brilliant, wonderful and phenomenal.......the book had me enthralled from the very first page to the end. I read Empires of Sands first and while I enjoyed that I thought The Sword & The Scimitar was so much better. I'm a total bookworm and enjoy many genre's and I hope that there will be many more David Ball books to enjoy in the future Would you ever consider releasing your books in e-format? Keep up the wonderful work Eleanor Kennedy (in Ireland) Name: Daphne Galea I bought Ironfire for my Maltese dad many years ago for Christmas. It was about Malta, he was Maltese. I thought he might enjoy it. He certainly did. Then my brother read it. Then his wife and my niece and nephew and finally it was returned to me. At this point, the spine was wrecked and it was literally falling apart. "Read it," my brother urged me. "You'll love it!" Well, I started it and that was it. Hooked! This has started something for me - I will HAVE to go to Malta now. It has created a sense of pride in me. I am fiercely Canadian but now I am also Maltese. I wish I could have discussed this book with my dad who passed away in 2009. That would have been special. Your skill and pssion with words and the way you have breathed life into this amazing time in history will resonate with me for a long time. I just got a Maltese cross tattoo and I think my dad would have been happy! Name: Melanie Olivari Saliba Just loved 'The Sword and the Scimitar'. Can't believe what my ancestors went through. Had never really appreciated this part of my island's history until now! Name: Melissa Estes Love your books! Many thanks. Name: Darlene McCausland Wowee! Empires of Sand captivated me and I am so looking forward to delving into your other works. Thank you. Name: Frida Cauchi I’ve just finished reading The Sword and the Scimitar. Name: Frank Theobald David Ball, I am sending this to you because I have read your, "Empires Of Sand." I consider myself an expert as to novels because of the following: I am 87 years old and have been reading novels since grammar school to date. I have never read a book so masterfully written excluding all of the traps of bad literature. An aside here. I could not read the section containing the suibterranean work the slaves had to perform because the reality was too much for me to stomach. This novel could serve as a model for future auithors. Mention any phase of successful writing and your story matches or surpasses what has already been written. Contact: City: USAState: New Jersey Country: RemarksMr. Ball,
I recently read your novel Ironfire. I have to say it was one of the best
books I have ever read. I was born in Malta in 1967. My father was a
British marine and my mother is Maltese. We emigrated to the United states
when I was a toddler.
I have always been fascinated with Maltese history. Five years ago I read
Ernie Bradfords book on the great siege while laying on the beach in Malta.
Although it was somewhat difficult to read, it was a good lesson in Maltese
history. I always felt it was a story that should be told on the big
screen. I hope that someone will want to make a movie based on your book.
Thanks for telling the story in such an entertaining fashion! I have not
read your other books yet, but I will do so soon. Good luck on your next
book!

Name: Barry Farmer Mr. Ball- Your fourth book "may be the best book ever written?" I hope so, because I was captivated by your other three, especially the two historical novels (if you agree to call them such). Any hints as to the subject of the next book or when it will be ready? Or is that asking too much? I guess you can tell I know nothing about being a writer. Barry Farmer

hi David!
i recently listened to Ironfire (on cd) and i
finished it in less than a week...i really loved your characters!! just
having come back from Malta in December, I chose the book due to the
location, but was unaware of how captivated I would be with the story.
has anyone ever approached you for the film
script rights to this novel? just curious.
Thanks for your time.

Name: Ericksen Dear David, I am sitting here in a painful state of shock, after having just finished your novel, China Run. I checked it out from the library, thinking it was a light read - a quick adventure to read before bed. I kept wanting to put it down, because it quickly became apparent that this was much more than I had bargained for. I continued reading, and soon there was no way to stop, even though it hurt to read it. During Ma Lin's walk through the compound at Dao Ping, I had to put it down because I couldn't read it through my tears. My husband and I returned to Denver from Nanchang two months ago with our daughter, a tiny, beautiful little sprite who I can no longer imagine life without. We stayed at the Jiangxi Hotel. I have read and tried to understand as much about the situation in China as possible, in an effort to prepare myself for the inevitable questions from others, and eventually from our daughter. I understand the one-child policy and how it has created the masses of abandoned children. I understand the Chinese aversion to people with disabilities, and their amazement at our willingness to adopt their orphans, even those with special needs. I also know how much the Chinese love children, and how devastating this policy is to the mental and emotional well-being of families. What I didn't know until reading China Run was the potential for governmental corruption, and the possible implications to orphanages and to the adoption community. My God...I think of the possibility of my little Eva having escaped being raised to be a sex slave in Hong Kong or Thailand...or languishing in a hospital ward waiting to have her organs harvested. It makes me shake inside with a rage I have never felt before. While I completely understand that China Run is a novel, it examines a very real problem, and is a plausible story. It is possible that a Dao Ping really does exist...or several Dao Pings, more likely. The thought makes me tremble with worry and helplessness. So, while I applaud you for your book, and will unquestionably recommend it to others, I cannot honestly say that I enjoyed it. I read voraciously, and find that I often forget the plots and characters in many books, even though I enjoyed them. The ones that really stick with me are ones that teach me something, that make me think about something differently, or that shake me to the core. Your book has done all three. With a heavy heart for China's beautiful orphans, Alyssa Ericksen

Dear Mr Ball,
I have just read the Sword and the Scimitar and would like to express my
thanks! I enjoyed the book so much! I grew up listening to stories about
the Great Siege from my parents and to read this book and bring it all to
life was fantastic. The only problem was that when I got to the last page I
wanted to find out more about what happened to Asha and Alisa and Maria and
Christien! So, do you have any plans to write a sequel?
Thanks again from me and all my family because as I read a few chapters I
was retelling the story to them!!
Best Wishes,
Rose Bonnici

Name: Mitchell-Roberts I have just today finished reading "the Sword and the Scimitar" and am itching to get on with the next part of the story: what happens to Nico/Asha? And what about Maria and Christien? They've all been part of my life for the past week (Easter holidays in France oblige!) and I can't just switch off like that! I've taken a look at your web site and am wondering what the order is in your bibliography - where exactly does "Ironfire" come, compared with "The Sword ..." ? I think "Empires of Sand" is a sequel, but not the very next stage of the story. Please let me know so I can order your books from my local French bookshop where I can order anything I want in English! It'll be worth waiting for! I've been looking up Malta in my encyclopaedia, wondering about going there on holiday, checking out the info on the Knights of the Order of Saint John - never have I been so taken with a story since devouring Wilbur Smiths' Courtney and Ballantyne sagas. Your writing is such wonderful entertainment and escapism! Someone signed your guest-book and said: "Bring on the film" - but a film could NEVER do justice to the story. I'd much rather lose myself in the pages of your book. The next one will definitely be worth waiting for. Many thanks for a wonderful journey! Ceri Mitchell-Roberts
Name: Foreman Hi - Just to let you know my husband and I have read all 3 of your books and keep looking for the next one. My favorite was "China Run" which I have just finished for the 2nd time. Keep writing. Donna Foreman
Name: Oppenheimer Hi David, I’m listening to China Run -as a book on tape- and I had to look up the author. What empathy you have with your characters. That is what strikes me, and then, your ability to draw me in as though I’m truly there experiencing the rains or the terror or the motherly nature. You’re astounding good at what you do. Thank you for the quality of your creation. I’m most appreciative. Sincerely, Nancy

Gatt RemarksDear David, I have sadly finished reading 'The Sword and The Scimitar', it is by far a classic and which every mature Maltese citizen MUST read. You are a master story teller and I kiss the hand that wrote such a marvellous description of the Great Siege and of life in Malta during those dark, medieval times. This book is wriiten in 4D, for not only can you imagine every site and sound you can also smell each of the exiting episodes that errupt from this book. I am an avid reader and this novel ranks amongs the best of the very best I have read so far It has to be made into a movie (please see link to film facilities here in Malta as I am not too sure you got the pictures I took myself)- David you have a budding grouop of fans in Malta and I am at the apex of them all. I shall try my very best to promote the book for english literature 'A' level studies locally. I hope and pray to God that he will give you the wisdom and fortitude to write another masterpiece, well done my friend - you have done Malta proud. ' Prosit tassew' Ivan Dr. Ivan X. I go to the library and get books on CD to listen to so that I don't die of boredom. I found your book by accident. Thank you for making such a long and exciting book. You have turned hours of exhausting city driving into a pleasure. I am almost finished with Ironfire, and I came to the web to find out if you have written any other books. I will definately search them out in the library. I hope that they are also in audio book form. I also had to pull out a map and find Malta. RemarksDavid, It has not taken me more than a whole week to read sword and scimitar (ironfire)... not because I am a fast reader but simply for the reason, as I could not put it down. All my spare time (and some other time) was spent on your newest book. Myself I have ever since had a deep fascination for history and good novels. To combine the both, takes a lot of skill, especially when it is being as well researched as "Sword and Scimitar". The characters you have created are incredibly well made, lack not the smallest facet. And one does not spent thought upon the fact that some of the characters and events are of fictitious nature. Thanks for that Book! Daniel
Remarkshi,
My name is Matthieu Magré and I teach English
in France and I just wanted to tell you that "the sword and the scimitar"
will definitely remain as one of the most exciting books I have ever read
(though I m not that old), the way you managed to combine love, hatred, supense, war, treachery, all of those set on such a rich and detailed (but
never boring) backgroung is simply breathtaking, so well, thanks, I ve spent
a wonderful week reading your work, félicitations, I l tell evryone I know
to run and buy it or to learn English as quicly as possible,
Matthieu (now an official big fan of yours)
RemarksDavid, I just finished reading Ironfire and about four weeks ago Empires of Sand and am in awe of your talent. Can you give me a sense of the subject matter of your next book and when it will be published? Thankyou.
Remarksthanks for a great read, i discovered iron fire at my local library and enjoyed it enough to recommend it to my book group. we discuss the book in june!
RemarksJust checked out Ironfire from the library where I work. So far it's excellent reading and gives me, an aspiring writer, the fuel to imagine my own adventures and courage to put them to words. Thanks Mr. Ball.
RemarksWell after Ironfire I couldn't believe you could bring me in again but you did with Empires of sand! Great work and very entertaining! I`am off too the book store to get China Run in the morning. By the way my daughter who is in her 3rd yr of college (history major) loves the books too! and to get a 21 yr old to read a book is a trick. Keep up the great work and we understand all the studying and research that you do and THANK YOU VERY MUCH. ken homsley
RemarksDavid, we met at the DTC Optimist Club meeting, and I bought Empires of Sand from you. I read it and was just terribly impressed with your descriptions and phrasing. My skin crawled when reading about the underground caves,in the dark no less. My emotions were all over the place with your characters, to love them or hate them. I thought it was a tremendous book and I have had several other people get it to read. This weekend I finished China Run. Wow, again my emotions went from low to high and were dashed back down again as they sent by boat, bike and by foot. A tremendous story. I would be very interested in hearing from you on were the real "run" left off and David Ball took over.... My only regret in our DTC meeting was that others did not understand that you had books with you.. Their loss.... I am now looking for Ironfire and anticipate another several hours of indulgence and an emotional roller coaster. If you need a spokesman, sign me up.. Rick Pearn
love CHINA RUN--I have read it twice and enjoyed both times--I even bought it!!! thanks
CommentsDavid, I just want to thank you and Melinda for coming to our book club meeting today. It was fascinating to hear how China Run was born and how your writing career started. I'm looking forward to reading Ironfire and Empires of Sand, and I'll be sure to pick up your next novel too as soon as it's released. Thanks again, Paola
CommentsIronfire---my first humane reading of a critical episode in our Maltese history, even with the few minor authorial 'liberties'! Thoroughly enjoyed the de-lionization of major characters involved and the de-sanctification of the rhymes and reasons, generally claimed and believed, of the politics of the period.
CommentsHello again. Best greetings from Germany !!! "Nacht über dem Yangtse"(China run) is a very good book. When I have read the first chapter I was sure the book will be very good again. After Ironfire and Empires of Sand I was very happy that the novel China run will published in Germany in German. I have learned a lot about China and I think the book is to short again. But this was the first book of David Ball that I could read on my way to school. So I finished it very fast. Now I'm waiting of your fourth book and I'm sure this will be good again. Bye Karsten
CommentsThis site is very useful. Keep up this excellent work - very good.
CommentsMr. Ball, I have read Ironfire and now I am reading Empires of Sand. I enjoy your work immensely. I am looking forward to your fourth novel. Thank you, Brian Seppa
CommentsHi David, You came to my school last year. I was in eight grade and only a few kids came to see you (I was one of the few). I attended Westlake Middle School. I now attend Legacy High School. When you were at the school (sometime last year) I had you sign my Ironfire book. I have read this book about twice (this is my second time through) and I need to write a 5 Paragraph essay about you and I think that I have run out of information. I hope that you will be able to reply and if not I just want to say thank you for the great book!
CommentsGot Ironfire first, but reading Empires of Sand first. I enjoy it very much, characters & plot are very good. Can't wait to finish so I can get to Ironfire - which I also saw a recommendation for on the George RR Martin site. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Jeff
CommentsDear Mr. Ball, I'm sure you don't know who I am, but I just thought I'd write and tell you how much I enjoyed your latest book Ironfire. You see I go to school with Ben and I'd like to consider the two of us friends. I was very interested to hear about your book Ironfire in English class and I was so interested that I decided to read it and write a review of it for our school paper. Due to the deadline time crunch for the article I read the book in what time I could muster throughout the course of about two weeks and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it. I never found reading it to be a chore and you really made writing the review easy. Again I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your book and to thank you for taking the time to read this.

CommentsYOur book "Ironfire" is a great read. I found it through a recomendation from GeorgeRRMartin.com in that author's list of books he is reading. I am looking forward to trying your other two books especially "Empires of Sand" because I like historical fiction and epic books in general. Thanks
CommentsSir Just finished reading Ironfire.....Wow..I am telling friends to be sure to finish all "chores/ and or projects," before starting the book. Do you have signed copies of Ironfire and Empires of Sand available for sale and if not,\ would you be kind enough to sign copies if I sent them to you UPS with return postage paid.... CommentsI really enjoyed this book. It was one of the best novels of historical fiction I have read in a long, long time. I also just finished The Great Siege by Ernle Bradford. It was interesting to be able to read a book that the author used to write this book. It was also fascinating to read a book published in 1961 of an event that took place 400 years earlier!
CommentsI have worked in China of and on for the past 4 years and found China Run interesting as a way of presenting the country in an interesting way. Do you plan others?
CommentsThank you for sharing your wonderful gift of writing. I look forward to all your future novels. I don't want to rush a talent like yours but I hope it won't take too long for your next endeavor. Sylvia
CommentsIronfire tells an exellent story and it is more then what I would expect from a novel. I cannot recall the last time I had read 700 pages in 3 days. Keep up the good work, and thank you for giving me such a wonderful experience.
CommentsLoved IRONFIRE! I'm off to buy EMPIRES OF SAND. Your writing is similar to Wilbur Smith's. Excellent romp through history.
Comments Keep writing!
CommentsOh my god. I'm finished the book "Empires of sand" (in german "Ikufar,Sohn der Wüste") today and I'm very sad again. Your books are to short :). I don't know what i can say. My best words i used for my first comment about "Ironfire" and i don't want to repeat all the words. So i only say: "The book is great. I like it like "Ironfire" and i cannot decide which one is better. So somebody else can choose. I say thank you for the good time. Now I'm looking for "China run". See you later
CommentsI JUST READ "IRONFIRE", AND "EMPIRES OF SAND" A YEAR AGO. THESE WERE GREAT- ON A PLANE WITH ROBERT SHEY AND SOME OTHER AUTHORS. DO SOME MORE TRAVEL; I LOOK FORWARD TO MORE NOVELS!
CommentsI just finished "Ironfire" (my first experience with David Ball) and I can't wait to read his other two books. I don't get "electrified" often by a new author, but I will now hungrely read every word he puts to paper.
CommentsWe thought your characters in CHINA RUN were tremendous, then read EMPIRES which couldn't be put down and now to IRONFIRE. It's wonderful to read novels based on historical facts with characters you don't want to forget!

CommentsLoved Ironfire! Just picked up Empires of Sand. I'm anxious for your next one!
CommentsMr. Ball, I originally picked up Ironfire simply because we share the same last name. I was amazed at the book and simply couldn't put it down! I look forward to reading your other work. Thanks.
CommentsI have read all three of your novels and the best word to use to describe them is "WOW"!!!!! I look forward to your next one...write fast!

CommentsI have just finished reading "Ironfire" and must say that it is a most excellent and compelling ride into the mists of the past. Thank you so much for the hours of pleasure and distraction it and your fabulous novel "Empires of Sand" have provided. Historical fiction is my drug-of-choice and these books were most satisfying. Looking forward to the next one.

Someday we should get together with DavidBall.com, David.Ball.net, davidball.org, daveball.com, daveball.net, davidaball.com, and davidsball.com ... yep, they all have home on the Net. Who'da figured there'd be THAT many David Ball's in the world? And that's only the ones with web sites using "the name." Yours truly, DavidBall.net
CommentsJust finished your book. All I can say is FANTASTIC! I love the format of weaving history with fictional characters. I hope someone is brave enough to make this into a movie. I originally bought this book for my twenty-three year old daughter who visited Malta a few years ago. Luckily she was out of the country and I got to read it first. Keep up the good writing. rlf
CommentsDavid, I just finished "Ironfire". I enjoyed it immensely. It covered a fascinating period of history that I'd probably forgotten. Now it's Barbara's turn to read. Ed
CommentsMr. Ball, While on vacation in Colorado, at 28, I had a massive heart attack and quadruple by pass surgury. While recovering in Denver, my brother happened upon Empires of Sand in The Tattered Cover. He held my hand and read aloud to me because I was unable to read due to a stroke. I finally read it myself and have just finished IronFire!!!! I wondered if I claimed Empire as my favorite book, due to sentimental reasons. Now I know, I just enjoy your books! You and your writing hold a special place in my life! Thank you, Julie
CommentsMr Ball, I have just finished "Ironfire" and wanted to say what a beautifully crafted book it is. I had a very hard time putting it down. Our library had recently gotten it and I was blessed to be the first one to read it. Tonight I will go there and check out "Empires of Sand." Thank You!
CommentsMy husband recently gave me Empires of Sand as a gift. When he handed it to me, he gave it with admiration for an author that he said had created everything he loves in a great book. One of his favorites, he said. It has been a long time since I have read a book with such a captivating mix of characters and a page turning storyline. It compelled me to look up more information on the web and this is the first author's site I have visited. I admire your work and appreciate the writing questions page of your site. Very inspiring. This evening my husband came home with Ironfire and I'm anxiously awaiting my turn.

CommentsLooking forward to reading Ironfire with great expectation!
CommentsKeep up the excellent work, David! I'm thoroughly enjoying Ironfire, as I did Empires of Sand. Without exaggeration, you're on par with Wilbur Smith with respect to style, pace, subject matter and historical development/perspective. Might you continue where Wilbur leaves off? (There are rumours he is retiring and that Blue Horizon is his last). Please continue your historical writing! Sincerely, - Rene Gadacz
CommentsHi, David. Just ordered "The Sword and the Scimitar" and "Ironfire". Can't wait to read it. I couldn't put the last two down until I finished them, which annoyed Rob but oh well. We have to have you over for dinner (and of course book signing) next time you are in LA. Would be great if Melinda could come too. I missed her so much in Belize! Hope to see you soon. Tammie & Rob (and various pets)
CommentsIronfire deserves to be read, read again and talked about for a long time.
CommentsYour Tattered Cover presentation was excellent. I really enjoyed reading Empires of the Sand and have already started Ironfire. Mike Duff
CommentsI like your sincere desire to share literature with meaning with others
CommentsDear David: I'm about 180 pages into this book and I'm truly impressed. I've read every book that Wilbur Smith has written and you are first author that I've been excited about since. I also enjoy reading W E B Griffin's books. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of your books. Please keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!
CommentsDavid- Great website! Looking forward to Ironfire. You have quite a following with my friends here. We're putting Ironfire on our Christmas wish lists. After reading those reviews, I'm even more excited. I've got a great idea - a book signing in NYC. All the best. Allen
CommentsMr Ball -- My husband and I are recent adoptive parents. I was afraid your book would be very upsetting, but it was wonderfull. I felt that you beautifully captured the feelings of a mother for her adopted child. Keep writing!
CommentsHi David, I just finished your book (China Run). Very well written - I enjoyed it, especially after going to China to adopt our daughter (from Hengfeng, a small town in the heart of where your story takes lace). Is there any documentation on the real-life event that inspired your story? I'd love to read about it. While it probably isn't as exciting as your book, I'll bet it was interesting.
CommentsHello, I am currently reading China Run. Just visited the website. I can't put it down. I am so glad that you've finally written another book. I loved Empires...... and had hoped you write more. You havnt disappointed me. I'm only on page 77 and aready, Im riveted. What a wonderful escape it is. what an excellent book ! I open it up and I am right "there". Please dont think I am another internet loon, Im not. I'm an operating room RN, I recently gave up my job and am learning how to be an "at home person"...... ( reason>my mother recently died, she left us my father>he has alzheimers, and Im helping him adjust so Im on leave from work right now to do so ) I have 3 kids (18, 7 & 8) Teens are (ahem) a challenge......in fact, today, when my college freshman daughter told me that she didnt really think she needed that calculous course, the one we've already paid for...that she will need to graduate, well,, I just said "mmhhhhhhmmm" and picked up your book and I didnt even get angry., My husband works for the defense dept and has been on travel quite a lot the past year, as he is this week, so books are very important to me, reading is my "outlet". Here on the east coast, its getting cooler and this exactly the perfect book for these chilly nights (would be a great book anytime though) . Your book is much more to me than just another great read . Its an absolutely wonderful escape, as Ive said . Its GREAT writing and I truly admire that. Myself, if I had to do nursing notes that consisted of anything more than a checklist, I've grumbled, I just cant write, so I appreciate talent such as yours.. I feel like I am in China when I read your words, my heart pounds when I'm reading. (i do not have a heart condition but your writing is THAT good) I am truly riveted, and I have to thank you because my attention span has been NIL lately and since I cant go on vacation just yet, Mr Ball, you have provided me with the next best thing..... what a special person you are, thank you soooo much for writing...... Please dont wait so long the next time. (I am sharing your excerpt with all of my friends ) Best of luck with China Run, and again, please write SOONER. In fact start now (I'm teasing, sort of,lol) ..... Warmest Regards, Loriann Luciani
CommentsI told everyone I know to run out and buy this book. I could not put it down. I gave it to my daughter to read and she loved it too. I cannot believe it is not number one on the best seller list. It was as good as any of the books listed. Please keep writing!
CommentsDavid--I am Chinese, and adopted, and a girl. i am currently reading China Run, and I love it. It is an amazing story of courage and love. It is also an insightful and informative look into a topic and culture that many people are ignorant of. Thank you for educating me and others.
CommentsDavid, I read China Run first and because I thought it was so well written, followed it up with Empires of Sand. I had never heard of you before picking up China Run. Now I am anxiously awaiting your next book. As I read China Run, I appreciated the map which allowed me to follow a flight across China. I have researched Chinese maps before, but found yours much more understandable. Also the book brought the map alive. I flipped back and forth as I followed the flight. Your characters are so rich and yet so believable. I cringed as Tyler acted just like a 9 year old and as his stepmom Allison tried to reach out to him and seemingly failed time and again. And I marveled as the trip brought them together in a conspiracy that made their relationship so much more sustainable. A final note; I found it just a little bit too much when you gave the 2nd baby that Ruth got, the name "Wi Duc Tu". But I laughed anyway. Empires of Sand was just as enjoyable. There are rich depths of human emotion that leave a person stunned by their intensity. Again, the maps proved immensely helpful, especially the map of the Sahara. You made a part of Africa largely unknown to Western ethos, come alive. I'm not a scholar and am by contrast a rather lazy reader. I tend to skip ahead when the story gets boring, even though I did very little of this in your books because of the rich detail. Still and all, I will probably measure every book I read from now on by yours, both masterpieces in their own way. Thank you for a most enjoyable experience in two utterly different parts of the world. Sincerely, Bill Turner
CommentsHi David, My name Is Sidi Amar Ag Taoua, I am a Tuareg from Niger, i live in Tucson AZ. I like your history and you web site . Happy new year to you and your family. Sidi
CommentsSubject: china Run David, I'm on the last chapter of your book. I started it on New Year's eve at 8pm and read non-stop until 1am. What a story ! Thanks for a wonderful, wonderful book. It's a masterpiece. Can you tell me anything about the story it was inspired by? Naturally I'm interested to know how much truth is in your fiction. It was so realistic. By the way, I'm from Edinburgh Scotland and living in Dallas, Texas. Have a wonderful New Year Gordon
CommentsI thought the book was awesome and wonderful story all i'd like to know if there will be or is a sequel.
CommentsPreparing to read China Run for our book club. Awaiting receipt from Amazon Books. Anxious to read and see about the author and his books. Hopefully, you will be among my favorite authors,ie: James Patterson, Michael Palmer, Dennis LeHane, etc. Thank you.
CommentsHaving taught school in Tripoli, Libya from 1969-1971, I was fascinated by this book. I drove across N. Africa in June of 1970 and made a loop into the interior of Algeria as far as Ouargla. Having also driven into Libyan oasis towns of Nalut and Ghadames, I have long been fascinated with the Tuareg and knew little about them other than by observation. thanks for the insights into their history, culture, and desert life. You have been a voice piece for an unheard people.
CommentsJust finished Empires of Sand. Wonderful book. Do more.
CommentsI enjoyed Empires of Sand and look forward to reading China Run.
CommentsI have just finished reading Empires of Sand; I read it faster than any book I have ever read. I am a Freshman in High School, and while I enjoy reading I often don't find time for it in between basketball, tennis and the flute. After starting the book I was forced to make time to read it, staying up often an extra hour at night to read. It is by far the best book I have ever read; I love the combination of history and and a brilliant story, in addition to the phenomenal quality of writing. I anxiously await Mr. Ball's next book.
CommentsHello
CommentsJust finished the paperback. Wonderful. Bravo.
CommentsGREAT BOOK---a real page-turner!---needs a sequel and HECK! why not make it a movie? anyway, hat's off to david ball---he really researched this.
Commentsfantastic book
CommentsA very enjoyable romp through the desert!!! I read it a while ago, and can't wait to see what you come up with next.
CommentsWhat a fantastic book. For the last six years, Trinity by Uris has been my favorite. Empires of Sand now shares the title. I really liked your discriptions of the Nun. You must have met my Engish teacher. I really loved all of the people though, well, not that nasty Elisabeth. I was glad to see her get her just desserts.
CommentsI thought the book was awesome and wonderful story all i'd like to know if there will or is a sequel.
CommentsI was enchanted with the beautiful and descriptive writing in Empires of Sand. The book held me captive. I have looked for more of your writtings and wonder if you will have another book our soon. Lauren Essex
CommentsGreat book. Helped pass the time on a trip across the states. When's your next one coming out?
CommentsI went to school with your sister and we were very best friends, I am not sure you remember me, however, I am fascinated in reading your novel, my husband is an author also and has written 4 novels. Your sister and I have just reconnected after over 35 years of not connecting with each other
CommentsEmpires of Sand: A wondrous tale that left me longing for more. Outstanding.
CommentsDavid, I first read a historical novel over fifty years ago and became an instant fan of Frank Yerby. Over the years I have watched the genre degenerate to stories that are largely "romance" novels. In the reading of "Empires of Sand" I learned that the genre is alive and well in your capable hands!! Thanks for a good yarn -- and for all the work you put into such a grand novel. Best Regards, Ken
CommentsAbsolutely fabulous!!! We must have more. I could not put it down.
CommentsDear David, i read Empires of Sand in German where it is called Ikufar Sohn der Wüste [Ikufar son of the desert] I have to admit that was the best and tension book I read the last years. The desert has a unique flair once you have been there you will remember in a special way! I have been in Egypt 1989 and drove from oasis to oasis from el dachla to el karga and down to Abusimbel! Great!! Big Big compliments for that extraordinary book ! A interested reader from germany ! Ralph
CommentsHi David Your website, like the book, is awesome. Any word on when your next one will be out? I hear it's even better than Empires - a tough act to follow. Best wishes and hurry up! Barb
CommentsI read your book last year, but just today discovered your website. Great book! The best read I had in a long time--compelling story and wonderful language. I've been recommending it to all my friends. I'm thrilled to have stumbled across "Empires of Sand"--I walked into Borders one day and it was sitting on the New Releases table. The cover and title caught my eye, and the quote from Steven Pressfield sealed the deal (I had just read "Gates of Fire"). Thanks for taking me to another time and place on such a rollicking ride, and helping me escape from an often mundane life. I look forward to your next book!
CommentsJust finished the book and absolutely loved it! Thank you so much for your vivid creation. Your language wove a wonderous tapestry for this romantic adventure in an unfamiliar setting. Your ending was not a disappointment, but not having your next book to start was. Any news on a second novel? I sure hope so. Best wishes, and thanks again for a great read.
CommentsHi. We're sitting here at work enjoying your website. The courts have entered the 20th century.
CommentsEmpires of Sand is a marvelous book, the best I've read since Cold Mountain several years ago. I deliberately waited until I finished the book to find out who the author was and what other books he'd written. I was a disappointed to find out it is your first novel -- I wanted to go grab all your other books and read them too. But it's a magnificent novel. You're a fine story teller. Too often lately I have skipped paragraphs and even pages of novels because they were too contrived or whatever, but I read every line in Empires, relishing them all. I'm looking forward to your next book. Thank you. Bob Pratt
CommentsLove your book, still reading it. I lived in the mohave for ten years, you have captured desert living very well.I am a 62 years old grandmom, so see, it fits all ages.
CommentsHello Mr. Ball, Your name and the title of your book was passed on to me via your wife and a friend. We may be interested in having you speak to our book group of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, here in Greenwood Village. We had a very successful showing for Inge Sargent. We invited the whole congregation and community. The time frame would be in the fall, 2000. The best time is a Sunday afternoon. Please reply and let me know how we could schedule that. I'm looking forward to reading your book. Jody Gardiner
CommentsFrom one of your first fans ... Terrific book and beautiful Web page.
CommentsI LOVED your book! Every page was a new adventure, which made me want to read without putting the book down! I wanted to read without stopping, but I also wanted the story to last forever. I haven't read such a fun book in a long, long time. I've recommended it to all of my friends. I think it would make a wonderful movie, or mini-series. And, of course, I'm expecting a sequel!
CommentsHi David-- I'm Melinda's best friend from J-School. They taught us to be mean critics there, so pardon my extravagance when I say BOY-CAN-YOU-WRITE!!! It is a great book, an adventure of the heart. I hope to meet you some day soon. Love to Mel and the kids---Kimberlea
CommentsAwesome book. It would make a great movie. When I find a great book I read it slowly savoring it. Even so I finished it in a week and a half. About three years ago I was reading a book calledSahara Unveiled which discusses the Flatters expedition. I remember thinking then that it would make a great novel. I'm glad you did it. Eric
Commentsthere is a histordical mistake in the book.in the first part where the jules' army career is described it indicates that he led a battalion that defeated a force of garibaldini in the "italian war". In actuality the Italians and French were allies in the 1859 campaign. they did battle in 1848-49 but that seems too remote ford this book's time frame. The editor should have caught this.other
CommentsHi David -- I finished the book and loved it. I especially liked several of the women in the book. It's a great way for me to learn history that never learned in school. Hope all is going well on the next book. JOYCE
CommentsDave -- One is always surprised to find that a friend has become a published author. However, from your undergraduate days to your Columbia thesis, I've always known that you were a talented writer. Never thought it would be historical -- but it was a great read! I look forward to the next one. Larry
Commentshello david, melinda, ben and Li just checking out your web site. Once again, very impressive!! Happy Thanksgiving and hope to see you this winter on the slopes. Cindy and Bruce
CommentsHopefully you will let Melinda come back to Israel when you go to Turkey for your research. I'd like to meet you too after seeing your picture all these Xmases. (Wouldn't mind meeting your St. Bernard either, and Potato would love to meet him, I'm sure....) So please, come! And maybe I will even read your book someday. Will look for it in Davenport when I am there for Thanksgiving. By the way, you guys will not by any chance be there that weekend, will you???? Love to Melinda,
